RED FLAGS

T
he lights were off when she walked gently to their bedroom. It was unusual for Greg to sleep without her by his side. Greg's bulging eyes staring at her from a distance was the only thing she saw. Frightened by the atmosphere in the room, Grace pondered what awaited her. She crept slowly and climbed on the bed but slept distantly from her husband. Immediately she covered the blanket, Greg crawled closer to her and began touching her body.

Grace (24) was a pretty lady with a queenly figure and a bumblebee waist. She had a flawless, bronzed, beautiful complexion and a honey bee sweet lips. Gleaming, white teeth covered her face and an angelic smile. Everyone loved Grace because she had a joyous
personality; the reason she caught Greg’s attention.

Grace journey to hell and back began when she met her husband Greg at a supermarket. As soon as they met, Grace knew she had found her prince charming. Greg (36) was a charmer with wavy black hair. Though his eyebrows were bushy, he had a pleasing face. He always wore fashionable clothes, and his spicy aroma was appealing to Grace.

At the beginning of their relationship, Greg lavished Grace with attention and thrilled her with compliments. Soon, Grace felt she had secured a perfect man who charmed her with passion and swept her off her feet. Greg professed his unconditional love and treated her like a princess.

Their dating period comprised several episodes of love bombing. Greg served her with breakfast in bed, roses at work, and kisses in public. Rivers couldn’t quench the love that Grace had for Greg. For this reason, Grace surrendered absolute control of her life to Greg because he made her happy. Soon after they had a quickie wedding and moved abroad, Grace’s fairy-tale marriage quickly soured.

It all started when Grace began noticing red flags in Greg’s behaviour. First, he made their financial decisions without Grace, even to the point of allocating her allowance. Another time, Greg explained it was his job to establish the rules and Grace was to obey them as his wife. Next, Greg isolated Grace from all those who cherished her and tarnished her name to the new people she met. Whenever Grace would worry about her parents’ financial problems and asked Greg to send them money, he became irate. Greg ordered Grace not to discuss her family matters to him because he wasn’t part of her household.

To add to Greg’s controlling behaviour, he preferred Grace to stay at home and wouldn’t allow her to go out with him. Yet, going out with friends and spending money was his habit. Greg concealed money and paid cash on things he didn’t need. Then afterwards, he would say, “I don’t know why I bought that.” They were always borrowing money from people.

Acknowledging Grace’s call or text messages was a huge deal to him. No matter how many times Grace called Greg, he would reject all her calls and ignore her messages. At home, Greg maintained an unstable behaviour of silent treatments that lasted for weeks. It was difficult for Grace to cope with his mood, especially when she tried to break the silence.

One frigid day, Grace received a call that her mother was sick. Her family needed her support to pay the hospital bills. When she informed Greg, he sighed and replied, “Your mother has lived long enough.” His response left Grace in shock. She wondered what reason to tell her family for not sending them the needed money. Grace’s family knew she had secured a very good job abroad.

Weeks later at work, Grace received a call about her
mother’s death. Confused by the terrible message, she called Greg, who hung up on her. Perplexed and troubled, Grace headed home in tears, waiting for her husband to return from the office. She needed to hold him and receive the emotional support she desired.
Moments later, the front door opened; she jumped up to Greg, wishing to hold on to him tight. But to her most profound dismay, he strolled to their room without expressing a word.
“I have lost my mum,” cried Grace. He sighed and replied, “Everyone will die someday, Grace, no one will live forever.” Stunned by her husband’s response, Grace sat on the couch holding onto a pillow while weeping and thinking of her mum’s love for her.

Several minutes later, Greg approached. Grace wiped her tears, waiting to listen to what he had to say. Instead, he hushed her and told her he needed resting. Greg’s lack of compassion puzzled Grace because she desired him to comfort her more than anyone at that moment. Lying down on the couch, Grace was eager to find out why her husband was so cool towards her even when he heard of her mum’s death. She couldn’t understand why he failed to soothe her either.

As midnight approached, Grace felt dozy and moved to the bed, but her husband prevented her from sleeping because Greg made sexual advances towards her. It wasn’t the right moment because Grace was distress. So, she tried knocking him away, but he pushed her back and pinned her down with his body.

Then Grace began screaming, but he covered her mouth and hushed her. He held her hands so tight, and ................

What happened next? Was Greg truly her prince charming?
